How can visitors understand the memory of a historical event beyond a simple chronological narrative? This was the challenge faced by the Museum of Murten: making a wide range of historical sources accessible while allowing each visitor to create their own journey.
Three ways to explore history
We designed an interactive application on a multitouch kiosk, structured around three perspectives on the memory of the Battle of Murten:
Representing
Visitors discover the Panorama of the Battle of Murten created by Louis Braun in 1894 through its digital twin. They can follow a guided tour or freely explore the artwork, zooming in on its many details.
Remembering
A selection of videos shows how the battle has been represented and commemorated over time through theatre, music, cartography, literature, painting, comics and historical celebrations.
Collecting
The application provides access to a selection of digitised documents (manuscripts, commemorative albums and archives) allowing visitors to consult the sources studied by researchers.
Digital mediation serving history
The digital installation creates a connection between scientific research, historical archives and cultural mediation.
For the Museum of Murten, this approach makes it possible to present the complexity of the memory of the Burgundian Wars without simplifying it, while offering visitors a more open and interactive experience.
